Jan 16

Have you asked that same question, how much money do I need to retire? There are many factors, such as when you plan to retire and how much you would like to spend. Because of this, knowing what you need to retire in Canada is not a simple answer, but there are a few simple calculations that might help to give you an idea.

The 4% Rule

The 4% rule says that you can withdraw 4% from your portfolio in the first year. Then in future years you withdraw the same amount plus the adjustment for inflation. This allows you to decide if you have saved up enough money to cover your desired income level in retirement.

The Rule Of 20

The rule of 20 suggests that for every $1 of annual retirement income you would like, you’ll have to have $20 saved up. S

All for a cup of Tim Horton’s coffee
Jan 16

I dont doubt that Daniel Da Silva is haunted by the death of Toronto Police Sergeant Ryan Russell. He should be: he knows in his heart that but for him, none of this could have happened. According to his interview with the Globe and Mail, Mr. Da Silva feels he did all he could to prevent a homeless man from stealing his Chevy truck, which wound up being used to run down Sgt. Russell:

Mr. Da Silva and his plowing partner were lining up for a coffee before 5 a.m. when they saw Mr. Kachkar, shoeless and erratic, dart for the vehicle.

“We chased right behind him,” Mr. Da Silva said. “We were watching the truck. It wasn’t like it was unattended. As he was closing the door, I was right on him.”

Mr. Kachkar managed to put the truck in gear and accelerate north on Parliament Street, but Mr. Da Silva wasn’t ready to give up his truck easily. He wedged h

Brighton Marathon will not have a major sponsor
Jan 15

Organisers of the Brighton Marathon have revealed there will be no major title sponsor for this year’s race.

The team behind the event had been hoping a big name would come forward but despite their efforts, they have not been successful.

However race organiser Tim Hutchings said there was still a huge amount of support and sponsorship from companies and businesses to ensure the event on April 10 is a major success.

He said: “I think it is probably down to the economic climate at the moment which has made things a bit difficult to find someone for this April.

“However our other sponsors are staying with us and we are still going to be putting on a great event.

“We are always open to all enquiries and always ready to listen to any potential supporters and sponsors.

Brighton apprentice training body hikes charges
Jan 12

An apprentice training association has put its charges up. Sigta, a charitable body which runs courses for apprentices, has increased its fees for training people aged 19 and upwards by 460%.

Now employers fear they will have to lay off apprentices.

Currently all firms using Sigta’s services pay membership fees of £150 per apprentice per year.

Next month Sigta will introduce an additional ‘apprentice monitoring charge’ of £700 per apprentice per year for all apprentices who were19-plus at the start of their employment.

John Norton, chief executive of the organisation based in Abinger Road, Portslade, said the move is due to current Government funding policies.

He said: “The Government has steadily ramped up the amount employers have been expected to pay toward delivering apprentice training from 25% five years ago to 50% this year.
